More Research Is the Key to Unlocking the Potentials of Resveratrol As an Anti-Alzheimer's Compound

A Latin proverb states that, "It is well to remember that there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend; one's present or future thirst; the excellence of the wine; or any other reason."

If the Latin sage who has penned the above saying is alive today, he would probably include another good reason why people should drink wine: getting a good dose of resveratrol.

Resveratrol is produced by several plants, such as grapes, to protect themselves from invasion of bacteria, fungi, and other pathogenic organisms. It is commonly found in the skin of red grapes and is an essential constituent of red wine.

Resveratrol was discovered by the Japanese scientist M. Takaoka in 1939. It would take another sixty years, however, before the importance of resveratrol would be fully recognized. In a groundbreaking study that was published in Nature back in 2003, David Sinclair and Konrad Howitz described how polyphenols like resveratrol prolong the lifespan of budding yeast.

Yet it is not a magical "Fountain of Youth." Further research is still needed to be performed in order to clearly define its capabilities on thwarting the effects of aging in higher organisms. On the positive side, resveratrol is a promising compound that may hold the key to battling numerous age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).

The most prevalent form of dementia, AD afflicts more than 5 million US citizens. Seniors aged 65 years old and above comprise the majority of AD patients in America. The CDC estimates that about 5 percent of seniors 65 to 74 years old have AD.

While the exact cause of AD is not yet known, studies have revealed that aggregation of a specific type of protein called amyloid-beta peptide in the brain plays a major role in the development of AD. Long term accumulation of amyloid-beta plaques causes widespread inflammation and degradation of neurons, which subsequently leads to extreme memory loss and other classic manifestations of AD.

Recent studies, such as one conducted by Marambaud, Zhao, and Davies, have found that application of resveratrol may result to reduced levels of amyloid-beta plaques in treated cells of rodent models. According to their findings, proteasome, a complex protein component of resveratrol, breaks down amyloid-beta peptide chains into smaller peptides and amino acid molecules, preventing plaque formation in that may wreck havoc in the neurons.

In another recent study by Karuppagounder et al, it has been found that addition of resveratrol in a transgenic animal model's diet may result in decreased Alzheimer's plaque concentration.

Yet research on the potential of resveratrol as an anti-Alzheimer's compound is still in its infancy. Much is needed to be done in order to prove the efficacy of resveratrol on fighting Alzheimer's disease on humans.

And it is imperative that more research should be done quickly. AD is fatal and causes numerous deaths per year. As of the latest estimates by the CDC, AD is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. And the fact that the population is graying at a fast rate is alarming. The latest Census report estimates that the number of seniors 65 years and older (the group that is most prone to develop AD) will increase to 72 million by the year 2030. More seniors translate into more AD patients.

While there are critics who say that resveratrol may be overhyped as the long-awaited cure for Alzheimer's disease, results from recent studies cannot be discounted. It is very much worth to do more research that will explore the curative potentials of resveratrol in Alzheimer's disease.

Alternative Medicine - When Traditional Drugs Can't Fix Your Sickness

If we get sick with the cold or with a cough or even painful muscle tissue and body, a lot of people rush off to the medical doctor to see if some medical care or a prescription medicine can help us. If the medicine works, then we head out on our way. But what would we do if the medicine or treatment method given by the physician doesn't give good results and consistently fails to make you remedy your pain? If this has been happening to you, it may possibly be time to look into medicine.

What is Alternative Medicine?

In opposition to what most people think, alternative medicine is not all about herbs and enchantment. The fundamental interpretation of alternative medicine is a manner of therapy that is possibly not educated in most principal medical schools. Medicine treatments can envelop nearly anything from naturopathy to teas and fitness routines. Medicine practices are achieving recognition, mainly due to the fact that men and women with common conditions are not as likely to put their loyalty in prescriptions and modern medicine than purely natural or alternative therapies.

Why Alternative Medicine is Gaining Popularity

Today's current market is composed of an increasing number of "label readers" - those individuals who assess the tags of the products they buy to be sure the components are something they recognize, or can at least pronounce. Several of the common beliefs from the public are that the side effects of many of today's modern drugs are worse than the diseases they are supposed to treat. Feelings such as this are driving more and more people towards giving alternative medicine practices a shot.

Is Alternative Medicine Right for You?

Probably. There is no danger in testing a consultation. Unless of course you have an aversion to needles or herbal teas, nothing is inherently dangerous about alternative medicine. If you are getting sick of traditional medicine falling short in making you well, now is the time to consider talking to doctor

Aloe Vera Now Available As First Aid Cream for Burns

True Aloe is Aloe Vera and it is also called medicinal aloe, and it has been proven to be very effective for healing, especially for the healing of the skin for first to second degree burns. Aloe Vera is a short-stemmed succulent plant and grows to about 20 to 40 inches tall and develops in areas that lack moisture. It is a vascular plant with a fungus at its roots. This is helpful to the plant for the fungus allows the succulent plant to have better access to the mineral nutrients in soil. Research has proven that the succulent plant is a great natural remedy especially for skin burns. This plant is truly a gift from God. Is Marijuana Effective As An Anti Nausea Medication?

When a patient is being treated with chemotherapy for cancer, nausea is a horrific side effect. Potent, toxic chemicals are being used to attack malignant cells, and the nausea and vomiting can last for days. Since the problem is repetitive, patients may start to get nauseous as a conditioned reaction just going to the infusion center. Vomiting may persist, and weight loss may become a significant problem with the patient becoming malnourished.

HIV medications can cause the same problem, and tremendous weight loss can ensue. If a patient gets nauseous every time he or she eats, then why torture yourself?

Marijuana can be extremely beneficial for both controlling nausea and improving appetite. It is actually the longest standing use for marijuana's medicinal usage. The active ingredient responsible for the anti-nausea effect is THC, which is short for Tetra-hydro-cannabinol. Since 1985, a synthetic THC medication named Marinol (dronabinol) has been available as a Schedule II medication. It can be prescribed and obtained from a pharmacy.

Marinol is an oral medication, and some physicians and patients feel that the dosage and duration are more difficult to control than smoked THC. There are some anti-anxiety effects in natural marijuana that are not present in the synthetic Marinol as well. This is thought to be from cannabidiol, which is a component of natural marijuana and not seen in Marinol.

Marinol seems to have mixed results. It may be due to the fact that it is ONE compound of THC, whereas marijuana itself has quite a few. Smoked marijuana has a more rapid onset effect and a consistent duration of two to four hours. It is easy to inhale only enough to achieve the desired relief for therapeutic effect. Ingesting cannabis may take up to two hours for onset and the effects may last for 4 to 8 hours or longer.

In 1975, an initial study appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. Twenty cancer patients found that standard anti-nausea medications were not helping and were randomized into placebo or THC. The THC caused significant relief with only mild side effects. Are there other anti-nausea medications that work? Yes there are. Haldol may help, and metaclopamide as well as prochlorperazine may be efficacious.

By the 1980's numerous states began sponsoring research studies on marijuana's effects with nausea. All six states found promising results for reducing nausea, and in 1986 the FDA approved Marinol for cancer chemotherapy patients.

Types of Medicine - History and Cure

Very few people tend to understand that medicine can be used not only for treating diseases, but also for maintaining health. It should be understood that any common disease (cold, fever, headache, colic and gastric trouble etc) that comes to the human body is a symptom of problems or has occurred due to their negligence. It should be noted that each type of medicine and therapy has its own tradition and restrictions. Following are the types of medicine used regularly:

Chinese medicine:

This is an ancient system of medicine and has gained popularity over the world. The treatment given has been designed to balance the body's chee, the main source of body flow which is an essential factor for health. When combined with a popular form of exercise known as Tai-chi and by fusion of the mind and body, the energy is directed towards the best direction for promoting good health.

Acupuncture: Used as a byproduct of Chinese medicine to provide instant relaxation and is said to cure diseases like infertility and migraine. Dated back to 2 century B.C. this therapy believes in the regular flow of energy in the body. Needles of stainless steel are used. Acupressure: Acupuncture, also derived from Chinese medicine uses needles while as acupressure uses fingers to imply pressure on key points to stimulate body resistance power and relief from pain. It is believed to have originated in Asia before 5000 years.

Massage Therapy:

In this therapy, touch is used to help relax or heal a human body. These are used mostly for muscles aches or those who have irregular circulation of blood.

Chiropractic Medicine:

This therapy believes the spine should be healthy and, a chiropractor after a session with the patient will suggest certain postures to make adjustments with the spine.

Osteopathic Therapy:

This believes in the body as a single part, and the problems faced by one part of the body may also involve others.

Unani Medicine:

Believed to have originated in parts of South Asia, it is a traditional medicine based mainly on the thesis and teachings of the Greek scholar and physician Hippocrates. It is said that the unani medicine became prominent after it was adapted by Persian and Arab practitioners as their own form of medicine. This became famous in India, China and the surrounding areas during the reign of the Delhi Sultanate.

Ayurveda:

Popularly known as the Indian ancient system of medicine and practiced in many parts of the world as an alternative to other types. This traditional medicine based system is based on the concept that the human body is made up of five elements - earth, fire, water, sky and air. Any disturbances in the five components will influence the body to have health problems. It strongly believes that any health problem is a symptom of the body not being healthy. Surgery and surgical instruments have been used in this system since the ancient times.

Allopathy:

One of the most popular medicine in recent times, it gives quick relief from pain and other diseases though this theory has been disputed by homeopaths like Samuel Hahnemann. The supporters of this therapy believe that instead of solving the real problem, allopathists provide only temporary relief which might give rise to side effects. However, this medicine is the best type to be used in times of operation, joining of bones or implants.

Hydro-therapy:

The use of water in medicine has been found in records dating back to ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. Water consumed in large quantities cause cleaning of the stomach by frequent bowel movements, release of all toxins and cleansing of the body. This traditional medicine based treatment has been found highly effective in treatment of cough, dehydration and headache.

Laughter therapy:

Laughter therapy has been found useful in recent times for diseases related to stress, depression, anxiety. One of the important factors of success of this therapy is the non-use of any kind of medicine and the ability to generate resistance power and stability within the body itself. Psychologists and doctors usually prescribe laughter therapy to patients suffering from depression and high blood pressure.

There are also other types of medicine which are popular in the regional areas but most of them have been found to be derived from one or the other set of the above medicines. I have listed only some of the therapies used world-wide.

What Is The Need Of Pediatric Sports Medicine?

As the bodies of children are still developing, they will need different coaching, conditioning, and also medical care than more mature adult athletes. Still growing areas in young children make them more prone to injuries.

When an injury does occur, it is essential to get medical attention from someone who understands the demanding nature of the playing field, particularly on the body. Specialists provide youth athletes with comprehensive care and services for sports-related injuries and conditions that affect athletic participation in a comfortable age appropriate atmosphere.

Pediatric sports medicine deals with injuries and many other issues of a child who is connected in sports. Pediatric physician can handle the children with sports related injuries and tries to improve their health and fitness.

Common injuries and conditions treated by a pediatric sports medicine specialist include:

• Knee ligament Injuries including Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears
• Anterior knee pain
• Patellar-femoral disorders and instability
• Meniscus tears
• Shoulder conditions related to pitching and Shoulder instability
• Repetitive stress injuries
• Elbow injuries
• Cartilage injuries of all joints
• Trauma and fracture care
• Concussion/Head Injury Management
• Heart Conditions
• Asthma and athletic participation
• Diabetic Athletes
• Many other general pediatric diagnoses
• Overuse injuries
• Cartilage injuries
• Heat illnesses
• Minor fractures and avulsions

Although teens and children typically receive good care from a primary care or general orthopedic physician, for sports-related injuries it can be beneficial to seek the care of a specialist. Injuries and conditions of the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints encountered by young athletes can be very different than with adult patients. Also, children are not always as adept as adults in communicating the health problems that they may be experiencing.

After the diagnosis and treatment, a pediatric sports medicine specialist can effectively monitor and guide young athletes by using physical therapy. Physical therapist can help young athletes meet their goals and participate in their regular play activities.

The developments in sports medicine are likely to ensure safe physical activity, while augmenting the performance levels to a considerable extent. Pediatric sports medicine specialists are trained in various aspects to provide your children better treatment facilities, such as biomechanics, physical therapy, athletic training, nutrition, nursing, exercise physiology, sports psychology, etc.

If your pediatrician suggests that your children see a pediatric sports medicine specialist, there is wide range of treatment options available. Discuss with the doctor carefully about your child's condition to ensure that the child gets the best care.
